Sean’s approach to portraiture is informed by his study of fine-art painting and the Italian tradition of chiaroscuro—the use of light and shadow to shape a subject and create mood.
Caravaggio is one of Sean’s favourite painters and an important influence on how he sees light. By studying the way painters direct attention, define a face and build atmosphere, Sean has developed a portrait style that feels considered, expressive and rich in character.
For Sean, lighting is not simply a technical decision. It helps reveal something about the person being photographed.

Sean’s portrait photography received a commendation in the Portraiture category of the 2018 Sony World Photography Awards. In 2019, his portrait Nabil was shortlisted in the competition’s Open Portraiture category.
